Arabic version: الولايات المتحدة تؤيد تمديد حظر الأسلحة على دارفور
According to Allafrica, the United States will support a technical rollover of the United Nations Security Council resolution on the Darfur arms embargo until December 11, following consultations with Quad partners, allies and Security Council members.
The State Department said the decision is intended to provide additional room for diplomatic efforts, including initiatives by close allies seeking a negotiated settlement, a humanitarian truce and a durable ceasefire in Sudan.
The United States said the extension does not weaken its commitment to expanding and strengthening the arms embargo. It said a broader embargo would better protect civilians across Sudan from the effects of the war, including what it described as a growing threat from drones and other sophisticated weapons.
The statement called for external military support to Sudan’s warring parties to end, saying continued weapons supplies and military assistance prolong violence, undermine diplomacy and deepen the humanitarian crisis. It also said Sudan’s neighbors must stop allowing their territories to be used as platforms for violence and destruction in the country.
Massad Boulos, the U.S. senior adviser for Arab and African affairs, said the Sudanese people deserve an immediate end to violence, unhindered humanitarian access and a credible route to lasting peace. The United States thanked Security Council members for unanimous backing of the rollover and said it would work with partners to turn that consensus into progress toward peace.
