Arabic version: ترامب يشكّل لجنة للتحقيق مع محافظة الاحتياطي الفيدرالي كوك
According to The Guardian, Donald Trump has announced a committee to investigate Federal Reserve governor Lisa Cook over allegations of mortgage fraud, renewing efforts to remove her after a Supreme Court ruling found her earlier firing unconstitutional.
Trump said the committee will consult justice department officials on whether there is “cause” for Cook’s removal. The White House plans an in-person hearing on 5 November. It will be closed to the public, though a transcript will be published. Cook may submit a written statement and will be examined by White House counsel and her own lawyers.
Trump said it was his duty to ensure laws were faithfully executed, including by firing subordinates who could not be trusted to tell the truth and follow the law. Cook’s legal team has said the White House is “cherrypicking” facts and that fraud claims rest on unrelated clerical errors. Her lawyers said they had “grave doubts” about whether the hearing would conform to the law, while saying Cook welcomed a chance to present the facts.
Cook, appointed by Joe Biden in 2022 for a 14-year term, became the Fed’s first Black governor. Her dispute with the White House began in August 2025, when Trump fired her over claims involving properties in Georgia and Michigan listed as primary residences and unreported rental income from an Atlanta property.
Cook sued, and the Supreme Court allowed her to remain in her post while she contested the allegations. In June, the court ruled that her firing was unconstitutional because Trump had not followed proper procedure or given her an opportunity to dispute the claims. Congress created the Fed as an independent, non-partisan institution.
