Arabic version: تكاليف شركات الطيران وتوترات الميزانية تتصدر عناوين الصحف
According to BBC News, the weekend Financial Times leads on what it calls a “mounting crisis” for airlines, while several papers focus on the forthcoming budget, the Royal Lodge repair bill and the Green Party’s by-election defeat.
The Financial Times reports that persistently high fuel prices are forcing carriers to cut flights, reduce costs and delay payments on leased aircraft. It notes the earlier collapses of Spirit Airlines and airBaltic, and says industry leaders, analysts and financiers believe the risk of airlines failing during the winter season is higher than in previous years.
The Sun and Daily Mirror both report that King Charles III has provided Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor with £1.5m connected to repairs at Royal Lodge, his former residence. The Mirror says sources described the property as being in an “absolute state”, while the Sun says the King “loaned” the money after Andrew surrendered his 75-year lease. The Sun adds that it is not known how he will repay it.
Budget coverage includes a Times report that Prime Minister Andy Burnham and Chancellor John Healey jointly rejected Health Secretary Yvette Cooper’s request for additional NHS pay funding, saying increases must come from the existing budget. The Daily Telegraph reports John Lewis and Waitrose chairman Jason Tarry’s warning that a proposed warehouse tax would harm high streets, while Marks & Spencer chief Stuart Machin urges Healey to reverse what he calls the mistakes of the previous two budgets.
Elsewhere, the iWeekend says Green Party leader Zack Polanski’s leadership is in doubt after defeat in the Holborn and St Pancras by-election. For World Mental Health Day, the Daily Express reports Prince William’s call for people to check in with others, listen and show kindness.
