According to BBC News, a man died after a tiger attacked him at Yorkshire Wildlife Park near Doncaster. South Yorkshire Police said officers were called at 13:35 BST following reports that a man had entered the tiger enclosure. The tiger attacked the man, who died at the scene.
Police said the man’s family had been informed and was being supported by officers. The force said the tiger was uninjured and stayed within the enclosure after the incident, adding that there was no wider risk to the public. It also urged people not to share videos of the incident that were circulating online.
The wildlife park said it would remain closed on Sunday. In a statement, it offered its thoughts and heartfelt sympathies to the family and loved ones of the person who died. The park said its emergency response procedures were immediately activated and that it was working with authorities to establish what happened.
Karmelle Pelham, 39, from Worksop, said she had been on a family visit when staff began evacuating the site. She said she heard sounds resembling gunshots and saw an air ambulance circling above. Pelham also described a large black tarpaulin over the tiger enclosure and said staff handled the evacuation in a very well-organised manner.
Yorkshire Wildlife Park opened in 2009 and its Land of the Tigers area opened in 2011. The purpose-built, two-acre reserve houses Amur tigers, an endangered subspecies with about 500 remaining in the wild. Images on the park’s website show a high visitor walkway and fencing above the area where the tigers roam.
