Arabic version: دافي يضع مجد كأس الاتحاد الأيرلندي قبل الجائزة الأوروبية
According to BBC News, Derry City captain Michael Duffy says winning the FAI Cup matters more than qualifying for Europe after his two goals secured a 2-0 semi-final victory over Galway United. Derry will face Waterford in the final on 8 November, with the club seeking its seventh cup success and first since 2022.
European qualification was not Duffy’s focus before Saturday’s match at Eamonn Deacy Park. Bohemians’ 2-0 defeat by Waterford in the other semi-final meant there would be no additional European place available through the league, but Duffy said that had no bearing on Derry’s approach. He said the objective was to reach the final and win a trophy, with Europe only a potential bonus if the club get there through the cup.
Duffy described the semi-final success as important after a difficult campaign. Interim boss Mark Connolly took charge following Tiernan Lynch’s dismissal in August, and Derry’s form has improved since then. The club have moved clear of relegation concerns while progressing to within 90 minutes of silverware.
The captain credited Connolly with encouraging the side to play free-flowing football and take risks. Duffy said players have been given confidence to express themselves, while also digging in for one another. He believes that has been visible in recent weeks as Derry have been dominant and played attractive football.
Duffy is now looking forward to leading his home-town club out at the Aviva Stadium for what he called a proud day. Waterford, who beat Bohemians to reach the final, are expected to provide difficult opposition. Duffy said the teams’ meetings this season have all been tough, but he hopes to return to Derry with the cup.
