Arabic version: تعليق الرحلات من وإلى الرياض بعد هجمات على المطارات
According to ABC News, all flights to and from Riyadh have been suspended or diverted after attacks on Saudi airports that killed 12 people and injured more than 300 this week.
Saudi Arabia’s King Khalid Airport and other infrastructure have been targeted by drones and missiles since a Saudi-led coalition launched a major military offensive against Houthi rebels in neighbouring Yemen. The Iran-backed Houthis claimed responsibility for earlier attacks that began on Wednesday, local time.
The third attack, on Saturday, killed four Saudis, a Palestinian, two people from Bangladesh, and one person each from the United States, Jordan, Syria, Sudan and Egypt, Saudi Arabia’s civil aviation authority said. Reuters reported that more than 309 people were injured. Hospitals received wounded people by ambulance and helicopter, with some in critical condition.
Hundreds of flights have been cancelled because King Khalid Airport operations were suspended for security reasons. The airport had a heavy police presence, entrances were blocked and lights around the complex were dimmed. There has been no indication of when it will reopen.
Australia’s Smart Traveller service advised people not to travel to King Khalid International Airport and urged travellers not to depart until they had reconfirmed flights with airlines or travel providers. The Houthis have warned passengers to avoid most Saudi airports, while exempting the airports of Mecca and Medina from that warning.
