According to ABC News, three people were injured after a four-wheel drive crashed into the front of the Shearwater Food Company cafe at Shearwater, near Devonport, in northern Tasmania. Two people remain in hospital with serious injuries following the crash yesterday evening.

Two people were sitting outside the cafe and a staff member was inside when the vehicle struck the shopfront. The crash took out the front of the building and caused extensive damage inside.

Tasmania Police Inspector Michelle Elmer said a 26-year-old woman was taken to Launceston General Hospital, where she remains with serious injuries. A 60-year-old man was taken to North West Regional Hospital and later released. The staff member was also taken to North West Regional Hospital and remains there in a serious but stable condition.

Inspector Elmer said two people were in the vehicle. The male driver, previously described by police as elderly, was treated by paramedics at the scene and did not need to go to hospital. No charges have been laid, and police said initial investigations indicated the crash was not deliberate, while the cause remains under investigation.

A woman sitting outside the cafe said she felt “lucky to be alive” after the vehicle missed her by inches. She said she heard tyres screeching about 6:45pm and saw the car come through the glass window. Police are seeking anyone who was at the cafe, witnesses, or people with information that could assist the investigation.
