According to Al Jazeera, at least two Iranian security personnel were killed in separate incidents in Mehrestan district in Sistan-Baluchestan province, near Iran’s border with Pakistan.

An officer commanding a women’s unit in Iran’s Basij paramilitary force, which is part of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, was shot dead outside her home on Wednesday, Tasnim news agency reported. Another officer was killed in a separate attack on a police vehicle in Mehrestan.

Haalvash, a rights group focused on the province’s Baluch ethnic minority, said military helicopters were circling over Iranshahr on Wednesday and that security conditions remained tense in several locations.

Sistan-Baluchestan, on Iran’s eastern flank, contains the critical Chabahar port. US forces carried out air strikes targeting infrastructure and naval control facilities there in July. Iranian authorities say groups they describe as “terrorist outfits” have staged multiple attacks in the region in recent months with outside support.

Last week, gunmen killed one person and wounded three others in an attack on a minibus carrying security personnel from a division along the Makran coast, IRNA reported. Earlier this month, the IRGC said it killed at least two suspected attackers and destroyed an alleged “terrorist cell” near Chabahar after a security-force member was killed at a checkpoint near Rasak.
