According to Cnbc, the benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury yield fell Wednesday after rising earlier following a stronger-than-expected September consumer price index report. The yield was down 3 basis points at 5.187%, while the 30-year yield fell more than 4 basis points to 5.52%.

The 2-year Treasury yield gained less than 1 basis point to 4.797% after earlier reaching its highest level since Sept. 29. Treasury yields and prices move inversely, and one basis point equals 0.01%.

The reversal occurred as equities sold off, with the S&P 500 dropping more than 1%, prompting some investors to return to bonds. The September CPI rose 3.7% from a year earlier, above the 3.6% Dow Jones consensus estimate. Core inflation, excluding food and energy, was 2.6% annually, compared with a 2.5% consensus estimate.

Investors are awaiting Thursday’s September producer price index, retail sales and weekly initial jobless claims data. Economists polled by Dow Jones expect PPI to rise 0.6% for the month and 5.5% from a year earlier. Futures trading measured by CME’s FedWatch tool put the odds of an Oct. 28 quarter-point rate hike at roughly 33%, up from 22.1% a day earlier.
