According to ABC News, Carlton defender Wade Derksen has been suspended for all pre-season matches and the first three rounds of next season after being charged with high-range drink-driving.

Derksen, 25, was charged in Jabiru in the Northern Territory after failing a roadside breath test late last month and returning a high-range reading. His case is scheduled to be heard in a Northern Territory court next month.

Carlton general manager of football Chris Davies said the club recognised that the legal process would carry its own penalty, but said Derksen’s conduct fell below the standards expected by the Blues. Davies said Derksen was aware of the club’s disappointment and that Carlton would support him while he took responsibility for his actions.

Derksen joined Carlton at the start of the season after GWS de-listed him at the end of last year. He played 15 games for the Blues this season.

Earlier the same day, the AFL announced a separate two-game suspension for Carlton’s Lachie Cowan following an investigation into his use of an illicit substance last weekend.
