Arabic version: رفض الإفراج بكفالة عن رجل من كانبيرا متهم بحيازة مواد إساءة للأطفال
According to ABC News, Canberra man Nicholas Tyson Quinn, 42, has been refused bail after being charged with two counts of possessing child abuse material.
Australian Border Force officers selected Quinn for examination after he arrived in Sydney on a flight from Europe in May. Police allege officers found child exploitation images and inappropriate conversations on a messaging app on his electronic devices. Further investigation allegedly identified multiple money transfers to a teenager in Europe.
ACT police raided Quinn’s Chisholm home the day before his ACT Magistrates Court appearance. Police allege they found a USB storage device containing child abuse material plugged into his computer.
Quinn’s lawyer said he could comply with bail conditions including living with his mother and surrendering his passports. The prosecutor opposed bail, alleging Quinn had maintained a relationship with a 17-year-old girl in Ukraine and had been trying to move his “girlfriend” to Australia.
Magistrate Alexandra Burt said police had not confirmed whether the Ukrainian girl was depicted in the material. She nevertheless refused bail, citing concerns Quinn could flee or endanger others, including because he is an Australian and Latvian dual citizen. Quinn was remanded in custody and is due to return to court next month.
