According to Cnbc, the U.S. budget deficit reached $1.992 trillion in the 2026 fiscal year, about 12% above the $1.775 trillion shortfall recorded a year earlier. The Treasury Department reported the result Friday, marking the country’s 25th consecutive fiscal year with a deficit.

The 2026 deficit was the third-highest annual total in U.S. history, behind 2020 and 2021. The fiscal year also produced record sums for both receipts and outlays, according to a Treasury Department official. The government last recorded a surplus in 2001.

Social Security was the largest spending category at nearly $1.7 trillion, compared with roughly $1.6 trillion in fiscal 2025. Medicare cost almost $1.1 trillion, while net interest surpassed $1 trillion, up from $970 billion in the previous fiscal year. The government paid more than $1.3 trillion in interest on the national public debt during the year.

Individual income taxes generated more than $2.8 trillion in receipts, a rise of about 7% from a year earlier. Corporate income-tax receipts were $381 billion, down about $70 billion from fiscal 2025 following tax cuts included in the One Big Beautiful Bill act. Treasury also recorded a fiscal-year high for gross customs duties, though refunds required after a Supreme Court ruling reduced customs revenue.

The Treasury said September’s monthly deficit was $27 billion, compared with a $198 billion surplus in the same month a year earlier. Total U.S. debt exceeded $40 trillion earlier in 2026 and has more than doubled over the past decade.
