According to ABC News, Premier Ben Carroll has pledged to cap Victorian public transport fares at $30 a week if Labor is re-elected next month.

The proposed cap would run for two years, until December 2028. Mr Carroll said the measure would provide cost-of-living relief and could save a regular commuter $1,400 a year, with full-time workers expected to benefit most.

Victorian Labor estimates the policy would cost $206 million over two years. Mr Carroll said the expense would be offset by savings made elsewhere. Half-price fares, introduced by former premier Jacinta Allan in April during the fuel-price crunch, are scheduled to end on December 31.

The commitment follows Labor’s Sunday pledge to cap Melbourne freeway tolls at $30 a week. The Coalition had earlier proposed a $50-a-week toll cap if elected in November.

Victorian Chamber of Commerce and Industry policy and advocacy chief Amelia Bitsis said members were concerned about growing election commitments. She called on major parties to show fiscal restraint, saying businesses and households were exposed to Victoria’s debt position.
