According to The Guardian, Michael Carrick delivered a near six-minute monologue defending Manchester United and setting out his view of the club’s values at a media conference at Carrington.
Carrick said United’s foundations and values had been established over many years, identifying humility, hard work and resilience as central qualities. He referred to Sir Matt Busby and Sir Bobby Charlton, saying the club’s rebuilding after the Munich air disaster was based on humility and hard work.
The United manager said the club could not lose those standards and that he would not allow it to do so. He said the team had shown it was capable of meeting them, but acknowledged that results had not gone well and that the group needed to demonstrate respect for the club, what it takes to be there and what is required to win.
Carrick rejected entitlement as a principle at Manchester United, saying the club’s history did not mean it was entitled to win. He said the side had “lost our way a little bit” but added that he was convinced it would recover. Carrick said he accepted responsibility for what happens on the pitch and for how the group looks and feels.
