According to ABC News, Sorrento Beach in Perth has closed after authorities removed the tail of a whale carcass found just offshore, with shark activity a concern.

The City of Joondalup removed the remains a few hours after surf lifesavers reported them. Beaches in the Sorrento area remain closed because residue from the carcass may attract sharks, the council said.

The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development and other agencies are monitoring the situation through the government’s SharkSmart app. It is the second whale carcass to wash up on Perth beaches this week and the third in the past month.

On Thursday, a significantly decomposed, 3-metre partial whale carcass washed up at South Cottesloe beach, closing beaches in that area. Those remains were buried at the Red Hill Waste Management Facility.

On September 27, a 13-metre, 72-tonne humpback whale carcass washed up at South City Beach and required an excavator for removal. The state government is expanding its shark-tagging program and may use AI-powered drones among measures intended to improve beach safety.
