According to ABC News, education ministers have agreed to consider screen-time limits and restrictions on students’ use of generative AI in schools across Australia.

The proposal is part of a push to improve education outcomes. Ministers met earlier in the week and agreed to set, or at least consider, limits on screen time in schools, ABC News reported.

A digital detox taskforce will be established to lead efforts to reduce device use in schools. Federal Education Minister Jason Clare said the announcement represented “the next stage of reforms to help our kids learn and to support our teachers”.

The move follows international testing earlier this year that found Australian students’ reading and maths performance had declined over the past 20 years. The Programme for International Student Assessment also found Australian schoolchildren spend more time using devices than children in other OECD countries.

Education ministers also agreed to change the primary school maths curriculum and improve the way students learn about antisemitism. Clare said schools teach more than numeracy, literacy and critical-thinking skills, adding that they also build character.
