According to ABC News, a 10-year-old girl has died after a two-vehicle head-on collision on Tasmania’s north-west coast, while a woman remains in a serious condition.
Emergency services were called to the Bass Highway near Somerset shortly after 5:30pm on Thursday following reports that a white Subaru travelling east collided with a Toyota Hilux ute travelling in the opposite direction.
The girl, a passenger in the Subaru, died at the scene. The female driver of the Subaru was airlifted to the Royal Hobart Hospital and remains in a serious condition.
The male driver of the ute and his passenger were taken to the North West Regional Hospital in Burnie for assessment and treatment. Tasmania Police said their injuries were understood to be non-life-threatening.
The Bass Highway was closed in both directions between McKays Road at Somerset and Old Bass Highway at Doctors Rocks for more than four hours. Police are investigating and have asked witnesses or people with dash-cam footage to call 131 444.
