According to BBC News, Altrincham are aiming to add another FA Cup giant-killing to their history when they face League One side Notts County. The National League club, currently seventh, have beaten 17 Football League opponents in the competition, more than any club to have spent its entire existence in non-league football.
Graham Heathcote, who made more than 500 appearances during Altrincham’s golden era of the 1970s and 1980s, believes that record can inspire the current team. The 100-goal midfielder helped a part-time Altrincham reach the third round in four consecutive seasons between 1978 and 1982, including draws with Everton at Goodison Park and Tottenham at White Hart Lane. He also scored a penalty against Liverpool at Anfield in 1981.
Heathcote said the side’s determination made them feared in cup football, adding that teams can raise their game for a one-off occasion. Altrincham’s most famous result came in 1986, when they knocked out first-division Birmingham City away from home. They were only the second of four non-league teams to beat top-flight opposition away from home.
Current manager Neil Gibson joined last year to help Altrincham avoid relegation and has overseen a strong start to the National League campaign. While the club’s priority is a first promotion to the EFL, Gibson said the Notts County tie represents an opportunity to create new memories. His squad includes five players who have previously appeared for Notts County.
The tie also carries a family link for Heathcote. His son Sam played for Altrincham and helped the club beat League One Barnsley in 2015, their most recent cup upset. Sam later joined Macclesfield and was part of the defence when the National League North side stunned then-holders Crystal Palace. Graham Heathcote said he hopes Altrincham can reach the third round and give the present generation of supporters a lasting FA Cup moment.
