According to The Guardian, a couple in their early 30s are considering whether to return to the East Midlands before their 18-month-old daughter starts school, after moving to the north-west three years ago to buy their first home.

The parents say their own parents and some friends remain in the East Midlands, while the woman’s brother, to whom she is close, plans to leave London in the next few years. They had moved for a change and to give the husband more distance from their parents, but have struggled to establish lasting connections in their new city.

They are weighing a return for familiarity and closer family contact against staying in the hope their community grows as their daughter gets older. They said school could be a deadline for deciding, while more regular informal visits with parents might make family relationships feel less intense than overnight stays.

Psychotherapist Katherine Walker told The Guardian that the child will start school in a couple of years, a period when deeper roots can begin to form. She said moving away creates opportunities for new bonds without necessarily weakening existing relationships.

Walker encouraged the couple to consider career opportunities, schools, local amenities and social life, rather than focusing only on older relationships. The advice also noted that moving back carries non-financial costs and that family members’ plans, including the brother’s possible move, could change.
