ABC journalists have brought home more than half of the awards at this year’s Media Entertainment & Arts Alliance (MEAA) Tasmanian Media Awards, held at the Hotel Grand Chancellor on Saturday night.

WIN News reporter Brent Costelloe was awarded the prestigious journalist of the year award for his coverage of the state government’s plan to phase out greyhound racing. The judges said Mr Costelloe’s exclusive coverage of the Tasmanian government’s plan to phase out greyhound racing was a stand-out among a strong field, with the story also named the best coverage of a breaking news event.

Additionally, The Mercury’s political editor David Killick received the Keith Walsh Award for Outstanding Contribution to Journalism, recognizing over two decades of significant influence in Tasmanian media. The judges noted his skill in addressing crucial issues and holding authorities accountable.

Other notable ABC winners included Chris Rowbottom, awarded for Best Print News Story for his coverage of a push to build Hobart’s $1.13 billion AFL stadium, and Adam Holmes, who secured the Best Video News Story award for his coverage of issues surrounding Tasmania’s farmed salmon industry. The event also paid tribute to late political cartoonist Jon Kudelka, acknowledging his contributions to the field.

According to ABC News, the recognition reflects the commitment of journalists to report on pressing issues with depth and accuracy, showcasing the importance of local storytelling in the media landscape.
