The ACT government has announced plans to defer several infrastructure projects in a bid to alleviate budget pressures, aiming to save about $700 million over four years. According to ABC News, Chief Minister Andrew Barr stated that the specific projects affected will be revealed in the upcoming budget release on Wednesday.

Barr emphasized that while some projects will be put on hold or divided into stages, the government remains committed to fulfilling its election promises. He assured that projects will still commence during the current parliamentary term, although not necessarily within the next financial year. The adjustments are primarily focused on health and housing supply projects, including the new Northside Hospital at Bruce.

Among the projects being deferred are various health, emergency services, and sports facilities in North Gungahlin. However, priority will be given to completing other projects, such as outdoor sports facilities like the Taylor District Playing Fields and Tennis Facility, and the redevelopment of the Belconnen Basketball Stadium. Barr noted that the government aims to prioritize health sector needs based on community feedback.

The Chief Minister described the move as a return to pre-COVID levels of infrastructure spending, stating that the previous ramp-up was unsustainable. He highlighted current challenges in the construction sector, including labor shortages and supply chain issues caused by external factors, such as the upcoming 2032 Olympic Games in Brisbane. Barr also pointed out that future spending will focus more on repairing aging assets rather than initiating new projects.
