Prime Minister Anthony Albanese will deliver a national address tonight, urging Australians to conserve fuel in response to the Middle East war. The address is set to be broadcast on television and radio across Australia at 7pm AEDT. According to ABC News, he will emphasize the importance of saving fuel for essential areas and industries.

This announcement comes as Australia remains at level two of a four-stage national fuel response plan, with the government assuring the public that supply levels are stable despite rising demand and prices. While the government has not publicly defined a clear trigger for fuel rationing, it is anticipated that reaching level four of the plan would result in such measures.

Currently, Australia has about 39 days’ worth of petrol, 30 days’ worth of diesel, and 30 days’ worth of jet fuel in reserve. In response to the crisis, the government has already released six days’ worth of petrol and five days’ worth of diesel from its emergency stockpile to address shortages in certain areas.

Energy Minister Chris Bowen has also announced a temporary reduction in minimum fuel standards for six months, allowing lower-quality fuels to remain in the country. Additionally, following a national cabinet meeting on Monday, the government halved the fuel excise and eliminated the heavy road user charge for three months to alleviate pressure on fuel supplies. Treasurer Jim Chalmers confirmed that the ATO will provide temporary relief for businesses struggling with tax obligations due to fuel supply issues, establishing a dedicated channel for assistance.
