In a surprising resurgence, Australian game developers are creating new titles for the vintage Game Boy console in 2026. Orlando Mee, a multimedia artist from South Australia’s Yorke Peninsula, began his journey in game development by incorporating interactive elements into his art. Using a free software called GB Studio, Mee designed small games that merged with his artworks, inspired by his Indian heritage.

Mee’s upcoming strategy game for the 28-year-old Game Boy Color features a family transported to a fantasy world rooted in Indian culture. He aims to pay tribute to India’s contributions to classic board games, highlighting games like Snakes and Ladders and Parcheesi. “Before it was even a video game, I thought of it as part of my arts practice,” Mee stated.

Another developer, Tom Lockwood, known by his pseudonym Gumpy Function, also embraces the limitations of the Game Boy to fuel creativity. Lockwood, who began developing games during the COVID-19 pandemic, finds the simplicity of Game Boy games allows for quicker iterations. Having transitioned from carpentry to game development, he has released several titles, including the viral Grimace’s Birthday.

Lockwood appreciates the short design cycles, stating, “I think the reason why, specifically, Game Boy development has been so good for me is because it’s quick turnover.” His approach has led to multiple releases, both as digital downloads and physical cartridges.

Mee and Lockwood are part of a growing community revitalizing interest in retro gaming. Their projects not only celebrate the nostalgia of the Game Boy but also explore new cultural narratives, bringing fresh perspectives to a beloved platform. According to ABC News, this movement reflects a broader trend of rediscovering vintage gaming during lockdowns, as players seek to reconnect with the consoles of their youth.
