Arabic version: وزير الدفاع الأسترالي يسلط الضوء على التحديات الجيوسياسية
Australia’s Defence Minister Richard Marles has declared that the nation is facing its most complex and threatening geopolitical environment since the end of World War II. Speaking at the National Press Club in Canberra, Marles emphasized that the global landscape has become increasingly perilous, with more nations engaged in conflict than at any time since the end of the Second World War. He stated, “The world feels less safe,” particularly in light of ongoing tensions in the Middle East.
According to The Guardian, the Albanese government is responding to these challenges by significantly increasing its defence budget. Marles noted that Australia is experiencing the largest peacetime increase in defence spending in the country’s history, with an additional $117 billion allocated compared to the previous government’s budget.
In a related development, the fire at the Viva Energy oil refinery in Corio has been fully extinguished. The incident, which involved several explosions, raised concerns about fuel supply, but the Energy Minister reassured that the facility continues to produce some fuel despite the fire.
Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan addressed the fire, stating it was too early to assess the full impact on operations at the refinery. She highlighted ongoing efforts to manage the site and ensure that fuel supply levels remain stable for the country’s needs.
