Recent statistics indicate a significant decline in overseas migration to Australia, with arrivals falling below levels seen in 2019. According to The Guardian, approximately 563,500 people migrated to Australia in 2025, which is 32,000 fewer than in 2024 and lower than every year after 2018, except for 2020 and 2021, which had pandemic border closures.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics reported that net overseas migration decreased from 330,400 in 2024 to 301,000 in 2025, as migration departures also saw a slight drop, falling by 2,700 individuals. The Albanese government had previously projected that net overseas migration would continue to decline, forecasting 295,000 for the year ending June 2026 and further down to 245,000 the following year.

Despite the decrease in arrivals, natural population growth remains robust, contributing 111,500 individuals to the population increase. Australia recorded about 300,000 births in 2025, a rise of 10,000 from the previous year, while the death toll stood at 188,400. By the end of 2025, the population was estimated at 27.8 million, with projections indicating it has surpassed 28 million since then.
