Hospitals in Beirut are facing an overwhelming influx of casualties following a series of Israeli air strikes on April 9, 2026. The American University of Beirut (AUB) Hospital became a primary destination for victims, with many individuals arriving in distress. According to Al Jazeera, Dr. Salah Zeineldine, AUB’s chief medical officer, reported that within an hour, the hospital received 76 injured patients, including critically injured children, with six fatalities among the injured.

The Lebanese Ministry of Public Health has reported a rising death toll of 303, with 1,150 injured, as rescue operations continue. The attacks have primarily affected civilians, with at least 110 children, women, and elderly individuals among those killed. Dr. Zeineldine emphasized the unprecedented nature of this assault, noting, “We’ve never lost this many people in a single day.”

Medical professionals across Beirut are grappling with the severe strain on the healthcare system, which has already been weakened by previous conflicts and a long-standing economic crisis. Dr. Antoine Zoghbi, president of the Lebanese Red Cross, described the situation as a “nightmare,” expressing concern over the hospital’s ability to cope with ongoing and future attacks. The World Health Organization has warned that some hospitals may soon run out of essential medical supplies.

Despite the dire circumstances, the Lebanese community has shown solidarity, with many individuals coming forward to donate blood in response to urgent calls from the Lebanese Red Cross. However, the long-term impact of the recent violence raises questions about the sustainability of such local initiatives in the face of ongoing conflict.
