Arabic version: بلجيكا تفاجئ السنغال بعودة متأخرة في مواجهة كأس العالم
Senegal’s World Cup journey came to a heartbreaking end after a dramatic match against Belgium, where they led 2-0 until the final minutes. According to BBC News, Senegal’s manager Pape Thiaw expressed disappointment as his team failed to secure a place in the last 16.
Senegal’s goals from Habib Diarra and Ismaila Sarr put them in a commanding position, but Belgium’s Romelu Lukaku ignited a comeback with an 86th-minute goal. Just three minutes later, Youri Tielemans equalized, forcing the match into extra time.
The decisive moment came late in extra time when a controversial penalty was awarded to Belgium after a VAR review of Lamine Camara’s challenge on Tielemans. Tielemans converted the penalty, sealing Senegal’s fate and marking a painful exit for the African nation.
The match showcased Belgium’s resilience, as they became the first team to win a World Cup match after trailing by two or more goals in regulation time since their own comeback against Japan in 2018. Despite the victory, questions arose regarding the legitimacy of the penalty decision, with pundits expressing doubts about the referee’s call.
This loss adds to Senegal’s recent struggles, having previously been stripped of their Africa Cup of Nations title earlier this year. Coach Thiaw acknowledged the pain of the defeat but congratulated his players for their effort, highlighting the unpredictable nature of football.
