Israeli opposition leaders Naftali Bennett and Yair Lapid have united in an attempt to defeat Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and lead Israel’s next government. Both former prime ministers have voiced their criticisms of Netanyahu’s leadership, yet they have not significantly challenged his military actions in Gaza and the region.
According to Al Jazeera, the ongoing conflicts, particularly in Gaza, have led to a dramatic decline in Israel’s international standing, with more than 72,000 Palestinians reported killed. Bennett, who is on Israel’s far-right politically, has promised a shift towards governance by professionals focused on Israel’s welfare, contrasting this with what he describes as Netanyahu’s divisive leadership.
The international backlash against Israel has intensified, with a United Nations commission declaring that Israel has committed genocide in Gaza. European countries, including Spain and Norway, have criticized Israel’s actions, and there are calls within the EU to reconsider trade agreements with the country. In the U.S., both political parties are increasingly expressing discontent with Israel’s military strategies.
Despite their alliance, analysts suggest that Bennett and Lapid’s proposed policies may not differ significantly from Netanyahu’s, particularly regarding security matters. Observers note that while they criticize Netanyahu, they have not fundamentally questioned the rationale behind Israel’s military operations or its stance on Palestinian statehood.
Political experts indicate that maintaining a strong relationship with the U.S. remains a priority for the Bennett-Lapid coalition. Any change in leadership could provide a chance for Israel to improve its international relations, but it may not alter the underlying policies that have led to its current isolation. As the elections approach, the effectiveness of their strategy in reshaping Israel’s global image will be closely watched.
