Naveed Akram, the gunman involved in the Bondi Beach shooting, is seeking court orders to suppress the identities of his family members due to safety concerns. According to ABC News, the application was made during a court appearance on Monday, where Akram’s lawyer highlighted the ongoing interest in the family following the tragic events of December.

The 24-year-old, currently in custody, faces 59 charges, including 15 counts of murder and one count of committing a terrorist attack. While Akram did not appear on-screen during the proceedings, his public defender, Richard Wilson, argued that there are significant safety concerns for Akram’s mother and siblings.

Magistrate Greg Grogin acknowledged that some information about Akram’s mother has already been widely published, prompting him to question the effectiveness of the requested suppression. However, Wilson insisted that the family remains at risk, citing past incidents as evidence of their vulnerability.

Interim non-publication orders have been granted, but a lawyer representing News Corp Australia indicated that they would likely oppose the suppression application, stating that there is a high threshold for such orders based on safety grounds. The case is set to return to court next week for further consideration.

The Bondi Beach shooting, which occurred during a Jewish event on December 14, resulted in 15 fatalities and numerous injuries, marking a tragic event that continues to draw public and media attention.
