Arabic version: ممتلكات بريكندون تطلق وليمة شواء الأحد من الحقل إلى المائدة
For the first time in two centuries the public has had the chance to dine on site at Brickendon Estate, eating lamb raised on the Archer family farm. According to ABC News, the long-table Sunday roast service features the estate’s lamb served with seasonal vegetables, gravy and traditional accompaniments.
The experience pairs mulled wine, crackling fire pits and communal tables with produce from the property and neighbouring farms. The Sunday feast menu includes pasture-raised chicken and a selection of heirloom winter vegetables, and the estate also operates a farm shop to help fund the running of the property.
The move builds on demand for agritourism and a rising local interest in the provenance of food. In Tasmania, seven out of 10 tourists seek out agritourism experiences, and Brickendon’s offering taps into that market while placing the farm’s produce directly in front of visitors.
Brickendon Estate is a 200-year-old sheep, cattle and cropping property and Australia’s only privately owned UNESCO World Heritage-listed convict site. The farm has been run continuously by the Archer family for seven generations, and owners say maintenance of the historic buildings is expensive; sunlight damage, rising damp and regular oiling are among ongoing costs. Richard Archer has said any income generated from agritourism would be reinvested in the upkeep of the estate.
Farm manager Will Archer and partner Sarah Bensen have used Tasmania’s cooler-season campaign to launch the farmhouse feasts, drawing inspiration from a trip to the UK and broader interest in paddock-to-plate experiences following increased public attention to farming. Caterer Larna Pittiglio designed the Sunday roast menu and champions more Tasmanian food on Tasmanian plates.
What happens next: The Archer family are using agritourism to showcase the property and support its transition to the next generation.
