According to BBC News,
The deaths of three young women in the sea in Brighton have been described as “tragic and horrendous” by the city’s council leader. Bella Sankey expressed that this incident represents “the most devastating news” Brighton has faced in a long time. The identities of the women remain unknown, and their loved ones have yet to be informed.
Emergency services were first called at about 05:45 BST on Wednesday morning to reports of a single person in the water near Black Rocks car park on Madeira Drive. Upon arrival, two additional bodies were recovered from the sea nearby. The coastguard has concluded its search, indicating no further individuals are being sought.
Local residents have shared their grief over the incident. Guy Jones, a nearby resident, lamented the loss of young lives in a place typically associated with joy and tranquility. Brighton Marina resident Ash Middleton remarked on the treacherous nature of the sea in the area, emphasizing the sadness felt across the community.
Peter Kyle, the MP for Hove and Portslade, referred to the event as a “sobering and heartbreaking reminder” of the importance of community. He acknowledged the allure of Brighton’s seafront but cautioned about the inherent risks of the sea. In light of the tragedy, a planned protest event by the Surfers Against Sewage campaign group has been canceled.
Sankey noted that the council has worked diligently to enhance lifeguard services along the coast, especially during the summer months, but acknowledged the ongoing challenges in ensuring safety. A recent safety review of the seafront has also been completed, aiming to address these concerns.
