Steve James was denied temporary accommodation because he was unwilling to surrender his dog. He opted to remain on the streets with his German Shepherd rather than surrender his pet for temporary accommodation. According to ABC News, he was offered shelter by the Queensland Department of Housing but refused to leave his dog behind.

James described the decision as heart-wrenching, equating it to giving up a family member. “It’s horrible to separate yourself from someone that you really love,” he stated, highlighting the emotional bond he shares with his dog.

Housing advocates, including Q Shelter chief executive Fiona Caniglia, noted that stories like James’s are becoming increasingly common. With Queensland’s social housing waiting list at a record high, many individuals are faced with the difficult choice of prioritizing their pets over shelter.

Animal Welfare League Queensland has observed that many homeless individuals are unwilling to part with their pets, often leading them to choose to stay on the streets. Advocacy manager Melinda Phipps remarked that larger dogs, like James’s German Shepherd, are particularly challenging to rehome, further complicating the situation for those in need of shelter.

The Department of Housing acknowledged the issue, stating they strive to find pet-friendly accommodation options for applicants. However, they also noted that many commercial accommodations do not have the same tenancy laws protecting pet ownership as private rentals do, leaving some homeless individuals with few options.
