Britney Spears pleaded guilty to a charge of reckless driving in the driving under the influence case against her, sparing the 44-year-old from any jail time. The plea was made on Monday without her presence in the Ventura County court, where she faced a misdemeanor charge stemming from her arrest in March for allegedly driving erratically.
According to The Guardian, the Ventura County district attorney, Erik Nasarenko, confirmed that Spears accepted responsibility early in the process and will undergo a year of informal probation. She is also required to attend a DUI education class and pay fines mandated by the state.
Police arrested Spears on March 4 after stopping her on US 101 in Southern California for allegedly driving her BMW fast and erratically. Officers reported that she appeared impaired while driving her BMW. Following her arrest, she voluntarily entered a substance abuse treatment program.
Her representative described her actions as “completely inexcusable” and expressed hope that this incident would lead to necessary changes in her life. As part of the plea agreement, Spears has consented to a diminished expectation of privacy in her vehicle and must comply with sobriety tests and searches if stopped by law enforcement.
Spears’ attorney, Michael A Goldstein, confirmed that she has completed her stay in rehab and expressed satisfaction with the outcome, emphasizing the importance of moving forward from this incident. The district attorney reiterated the goal of treatment and rehabilitation for first-time offenders, regardless of their public status.
Having spent nearly 14 years under a conservatorship that ended in 2021, Spears has made limited public appearances and indicated she would not return to the music industry, despite releasing singles in 2022 and 2023.
