Arabic version: برنهام يعلن عدم إجراء انتخابات مبكرة إذا تم انتخابه رئيساً للوزراء
Andy Burnham has ruled out calling an early general election if he becomes prime minister later this month. During an online Ask Me Anything (AMA) session on Reddit, Burnham stated, “No. As I said in my speech on Monday, I’m going to work to the 2024 manifesto.”
Currently the only candidate to succeed Sir Keir Starmer as leader of the Labour Party, Burnham is poised to potentially assume the role of prime minister on 20 July. The last general election took place on 4 July 2024, with Labour winning a landslide majority, meaning the next election must be called by August 2029 unless a prime minister opts to call one sooner. According to BBC News, Burnham’s AMA attracted thousands of questions, including one from Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch.
Badenoch criticized Burnham for avoiding tougher media scrutiny, urging him to engage in a proper press conference. Burnham responded, emphasizing his recent engagement with 74,000 constituents during the Makerfield by-election campaign. He has only participated in one media interview since announcing his candidacy for Labour leader.
In addition to addressing election queries, Burnham discussed various policy positions during the AMA. He expressed his intent to negotiate a returns agreement for failed refugees, including those from Taliban-run Afghanistan. He also confirmed he would maintain the triple lock on pensions, which ensures that state pensions increase annually based on inflation, wage growth, or a minimum of 2.5%.
Burnham reiterated his commitment to fostering a closer relationship with the EU. Although he previously indicated a desire to see the UK rejoin the EU, he promised not to revisit Brexit debates during the Makerfield campaign. When asked about negotiating a more ambitious trade deal, he affirmed, “Yes, I will build on the good work the government has already done in this area.”
