A Byron Bay police officer, who previously served as a lifeguard on Bondi Rescue, successfully rescued three French tourists at Little Wategos Beach. The men were found clinging to rocks about 100 metres from the beach, as powerful waves crashed around them.
According to ABC News, Constable Tommy Frazer was on a routine patrol when he received emergency calls about the stranded surfers. He and his partner, Constable Toby Govan, quickly responded, racing to the scene with lights and sirens.
Upon reaching the beach, Frazer made the quick decision to swim out to the tourists after removing his uniform, stating that the situation required immediate action. The tourists were in a state of panic, complicating the rescue due to a language barrier. Frazer focused on calming them while formulating a plan to safely return them to shore.
One of the tourists appeared to be in serious distress, prompting Frazer to dive back into the water with him while ensuring he remained afloat. Two of the tourists managed to swim back to safety, while Frazer continued to support the most vulnerable individual until a rescue jet ski arrived.
The rescued man was later taken to Lismore Base Hospital, where he is reported to be in serious but stable condition. Frazer reflected on his experience, noting that his decade of lifeguard training significantly aided him during the rescue. Despite the challenging circumstances, he expressed that it was not the most daunting rescue he has encountered in his career.
