A three-day capacity-building workshop for South Sudanese lawyers concluded on 19 September, bringing together practitioners from all ten states. The program focused on practical courtroom skills, legal procedure and professional ethics—equipping participants to handle cases effectively, deliver fair and trusted justice, and uphold the integrity of the law.

Beyond immediate skills development, the training prepared participants to contribute meaningfully to the ongoing constitutional process as the country moves towards general elections in December. It also created space for both emerging and practising lawyers to exchange experiences and adopt new approaches that improve their understanding of procedures in the courts.

Despite significant challenges—including widespread legal violations and institutional constraints—many lawyers underscored the urgency of building strong, independent judicial institutions across the country to better protect citizens’ rights. The workshop’s outcomes are a step towards a more resilient justice system and a stronger rule of law in South Sudan.
