Arabic version: رحلة كاب فيردي في كأس العالم تفتح آفاق جديدة للاعبين
Cape Verde’s national football team, known as the Blue Sharks, made a remarkable debut in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, capturing the attention of fans worldwide. According to SBS News, the team’s journey ended with a defeat against Argentina, but their performance highlighted the potential of players from the nation’s diaspora community.
Ranked 67th in the world, Cape Verde surprised many by advancing to the Group of 32. The team, comprised of players from a small island nation with a population of about 500,000, utilized platforms like LinkedIn to recruit talent from its diaspora, which often outnumbers local residents. Their matches against stronger teams like Spain and Uruguay showcased their determination and skill.
The standout player, goalkeeper Josimar José Évora Dias, known as Vozinha, gained significant recognition during the tournament, notably for his impressive saves against Spain. Despite his newfound fame and millions of social media followers, Vozinha currently has no club to return to after his contract with second-division Portuguese club, Chaves, expired.
Other players are also navigating their careers post-tournament. Roberto ‘Pico’ Lopes, who joined the national team after a LinkedIn invitation, is expected to return to his club, Shamrock Rovers, as they vie for a spot in the UEFA Champions League. Striker Sidny Lopes Cabral, who recently signed with Trabzonspor, also enjoyed success in the tournament, scoring a crucial goal against Argentina.
While Cape Verde did not progress beyond the round of 32, their performance has been a source of pride, with players expressing hope that their efforts have brought greater visibility to their nation. Pico emphasized that Cape Verde is now recognized on the global football map, stating, “We’re a small nation but with big hearts and we showed what is possible.”
