A woman in her 20s is fighting for her life after a late-night single-vehicle crash in Catani that left three other family members hospitalised. According to ABC News, emergency services were called just before midnight on Saturday after a car left the road and flipped into a drainage culvert.

Detective Sergeant Mark Amos of the Major Collision Investigation Unit said the woman was a rear passenger and had suffered life-threatening injuries. “The young girl in the back seat is in the fight of her life at the moment,” he said. Her mother, who was the front passenger, sustained a serious head injury; both were taken to the Alfred Hospital. The driver, believed to be the father, was taken to Frankston Hospital with minor injuries, and another daughter was treated for non-life-threatening injuries. All four occupants were transported to hospital following the crash.

Police believe the car was travelling north on Heads Road when it failed to stop at the intersection with Koo Wee Rup-Longwarry Road at Catani, south-west of Warragul. The vehicle crossed the intersection, left the road, travelled down an embankment and rolled into a drainage culvert. Four people were inside the car at the time, and officers said the family are local residents.

Detective Sergeant Amos said investigators would examine whether factors including weather conditions and speed contributed to the crash. “There were some fairly substantial fog patches around this area,” he said. He also urged drivers to take care on country roads, particularly in difficult conditions: “It’s a back country road, it’s dark and you’ve just got be careful,” he said. Police described the incident as having left the family facing serious consequences and warned drivers to be cautious on rural routes.

Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives are continuing their investigation. Anyone who witnessed the Catani crash or has footage is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
