On the evening of April 30th, the Syrian Socialist Nationalist Party (SSNP) hosted a book launch for “Antun Sa’adeh, A Man Ahead of His Time” and “Stoic Philosophy, From Zeinoun to Sa’adeh” by Edmond Melhem at the Yagoona community center. Among the attendees were the author, Melhem, and the executive director of the Sydney branch of the SSNP, Mahdi Nazha. The event began with a book signing by the author, followed by speeches from a panel of four. The books were sold based on a financial contribution given by the buyer, with the amount donated decided by the buyer.
“Antun Sa’adeh, A Man Ahead of His Time,” the first book, portrays Sa’adeh as a man of unique vision who could not be handled during his life, ultimately costing him his life. The book emphasizes Sa’adeh’s enduring vision for a better life in a peaceful world dominated by higher values centered on his nation, Syria, and humanity at large. The second book, “Stoic Philosophy, From Zeinoun to Sa’adeh,” explains the history of the Stoic school of philosophy founded by Zeno of Citium, its aftermath after his death, and connects the philosophy and integrity of the school with Sa’adeh, who is also a noted philosopher. Other books written by Melhem, covering topics ranging from Sa’adeh to an analysis of the role and importance of women in a Greater Syrian nation, were also on display at the event and available for purchase.
Following the book signing, the panel of four, including Melhem, took to the stage to discuss the published works. The first three panelists focused on the character and life of Sa’adeh and how he continues to serve as a source of inspiration to the party. One panelist expressed the need for a bonded society to rise and denounced racist and sectarian doctrine, which aligns with Sa’adeh’s ultimate vision and the integrity of the Stoic school of philosophy.
After the first three panelists spoke, Melhem took the microphone to give his speech. He spoke of the party’s history and reflected on the various leadership that has succeeded Sa’adeh in party leadership positions. Melhem emphasized the importance of history and the party, sharing a quote by Sa’adeh about shame to nations with no history as no one would admit to their existence. He further explained how Sa’adeh valued the history of Syria and its people and worked to pass on that knowledge through education.
Overall, the event was a celebration of Sa’adeh’s unique vision and the Stoic school of philosophy, highlighting the importance of history, education, and societal bonding in achieving a better future.
