Edge Early Learning Gawler East has been temporarily closed. This marks the second closure of the center this year, directed by the Education Standards Board (ESB) due to ongoing concerns regarding allergen management.

A child was taken to hospital last week after food containing a known allergen was served to them at the center. According to ABC News, the closure is set to last three months as the ESB investigates the center’s ability to safely manage allergens. The incident occurred when a child was served meatballs containing soy from an alternative supplier without prior ingredient checks, leading to a severe allergic reaction.

Benn Gramola, chief executive of the ESB, expressed significant concerns about the center’s procedures and has issued an emergency action notice. He emphasized the seriousness of the situation and indicated that further actions against the center could be considered if necessary.

Edge Early Learning’s managing director, Chris Chambers, has acknowledged the need for a full operational reset, stating that a three-month closure is essential for addressing the challenges faced by the center. He reassured families that efforts are being made to find alternative childcare arrangements while ensuring the safety and well-being of the children.

This incident follows a previous two-week closure of the same center earlier this year due to poor allergen management practices. The ESB has increased compliance checks across childcare centers in South Australia, reflecting a commitment to maintaining high safety standards for children in care.
