Now is your chance to shine a spotlight on the unsung heroes in our community, with nominations officially open for the 2026 City of Parramatta Citizen of the Year Awards.

The annual awards celebrate the incredible individuals and groups who go above and beyond for the local community, whether it’s through volunteering, leadership, creativity, environmental action or just showing up when it matters most.

City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Cr Martin Zaiter said he was looking forward to hearing about the unsung heroes who serve the community.

“Every year, I’m blown away by the generosity, passion and heart of our local residents,” said Cr Zaiter.

“The Citizen of the Year Awards are all about recognising the everyday legends who make Parramatta such a vibrant and caring place to live. If someone inspires you – nominate them.

“These awards are a chance to thank the people who bring out the best in us and give them the recognition they deserve.”

2025 Citizen of the Year Award Recipient Bhumika Mayur Mhatre said it was an honour to receive the award which was one of the most humbling and uplifting experiences of her life.

“This honour is not simply about me – it shines a light on the extraordinary spirit of service that exists within our community,” Ms Mhatre said.

“The truth is, people volunteer because it is their calling – their heart song – and it comes from a place of deep soul-level satisfaction, yet it is the universe that reciprocates in its own way.

“As nominations open for the 2026 Citizen of the Year Award, I encourage everyone to reflect on those individuals whose tireless efforts often go unnoticed but whose impact is immeasurable, and I wish the very best of luck to the 2026 nominees and future recipients – may your light continue to inspire us all.”

There are two award categories (Citizen of the Year and Community Group Award) with a total of four awards up for grabs, including:

  • Young Citizen of the Year in honour of David Shakespeare OAM (16-30 years)
  • Citizen of the Year (31-64 years)
  • Senior Citizen of the Year (65+ years)
  • Community Group Award

You don’t need to live in Parramatta to nominate someone. Everyone is welcome to submit a nomination, but nominees must live, work or contribute significantly to the Parramatta area.

For those interested in deciding who takes home the honours, expressions of interest are also open for two local community members to join the official judging panel – a great opportunity to represent your community and help spotlight real impact.

Nominations will close at 5pm on Friday 14 November, with judging panel EOIs closing at 5pm on Monday 27 October. The awards ceremony will take place as part of Council’s Australia Day program.
