Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has been crowned best game at this year’s Bafta Games Awards – but it didn’t quite sweep the board as expected. The French studio Sandfall Interactive, which developed the role-playing adventure, also secured awards for debut game and lead performer, awarded to actress Jennifer English. According to BBC News, the game had entered the ceremony with 12 nominations across 10 categories but missed out on both the supporting performer category and the music award.
Set in a fantastical world where a supernatural entity known as The Paintress halts the population’s growth, Expedition 33 has been praised for its emotional storytelling and classic turn-based combat mechanics. Studio chief Guillaume Broche expressed gratitude to the team and players during the acceptance speech, emphasizing the game’s impact on those dealing with grief and loss.
The night also celebrated the superhero adventure Dispatch, which won three awards, including animation and audio achievement. Actor Jeffrey Wright, recognized for his supporting role in Dispatch, was unable to attend the ceremony to accept his award.
In addition to individual accolades, the awards highlighted the contributions of independent developers, with Tonda Ros winning the game design award for his puzzle adventure Blue Prince. The ceremony also recognized Ilkka Paananen, the CEO of Supercell, with a fellowship award for his extensive career in the gaming industry.
The Bafta Games Awards continue to be a significant event in the gaming world, showcasing both established and emerging talent within the industry. This year, 255 games were submitted for consideration, reflecting a diverse range of entries, including many from independent UK developers.
