Lloyd and Sue Clarke, the parents of Hannah Clarke, have decided to step back from their active roles in the charity they founded, Small Steps 4 Hannah, due to the emotional toll it has taken on them. According to ABC News, the couple hopes that their daughter’s story will not be forgotten as they transition to a more behind-the-scenes approach.

The Clarkes have faced immense grief since the tragic death of their daughter and her three children at the hands of Rowan Baxter, Hannah’s estranged husband. The couple has been vocal advocates against domestic violence, successfully lobbying for significant changes in Queensland, including the criminalization of coercive control.

Despite their achievements, the emotional weight of their advocacy has become overwhelming. Sue Clarke shared that recounting the events surrounding Hannah’s death often leaves them emotionally drained for days. Lloyd noted that their intense initial response, driven by anger and adrenaline, has taken a toll on their health, with Sue experiencing hospitalizations nearly every year.

The Clarkes intend to keep Small Steps 4 Hannah operational but will reduce their public responsibilities. They plan to wind down their coercive control awareness training program, Hannah’s Story, which has had a significant impact on police training in other states, although they are frustrated that it has not been adopted by Queensland Police. They continue to emphasize the importance of their daughter’s legacy and the need for ongoing awareness of domestic violence issues.
