Collingwood edged North Melbourne 13.11 (89) to 12.13 (85) in a four-point thriller at Docklands, played in front of 48,369 fans.
According to ABC News, Collingwood kicked three of the last four goals. Nick Daicos burst through the middle to set up the play that led to Tim Membrey’s go-ahead goal, and North charged forward in the dying seconds with a pack unsuccessfully flying for a mark 35 metres out before the siren.
Jack Crisp’s VFL/AFL consecutive-games run is in danger after a tackle that concussed North Melbourne’s Tom Blamires. Blamires was ruled out of the match and placed in the AFL’s mandatory 12-day concussion protocols. After playing 279 games in a row, starting in round 18, 2014, Crisp could be cited by match review officer Michael Christian. The report also notes Crisp has played 291 AFL games and broke Jim Stynes’s long-standing consecutive-games record of 244 in round eight last year.
Injuries disrupted both sides: Collingwood forward Lachie Schultz limped off with an ankle injury in the second quarter, received treatment in the rooms and did not return. Nick Daicos finished with 28 possessions and one goal, brother Josh Daicos had 33 possessions, and Dan McStay kicked an equal game-high three goals for Collingwood. North captain Nick Larkey kicked 3.4 and had entered the match with 2.7 over the past two weeks.
Collingwood coach Craig McRae praised Nick Daicos after the match, saying the game plan — with some tongue in cheek — was “just get it to Nick.” North coach Alastair Clarkson said he was disappointed Blamires would miss footy but would not comment on the Crisp tackle because he had not seen it.
The win puts Collingwood into seventh place, jumping Geelong and the Western Bulldogs. The loss leaves North Melbourne in 11th, equal on points with the Blues in the wildcard position above them, with Carlton still to play this weekend.
