Arabic version: تجمع المجتمع لدعم عائلة كومانجاي ليتل بيبي بعد المأساة
The family of Kumanjayi Little Baby, a five-year-old whose body was found on the outskirts of Alice Springs on Thursday, has expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support from the community. According to ABC News, tributes have been pouring in from across the country, with residents laying flowers and teddy bears outside the Old Timers / Ilyperenye town camp where the child was last seen.
Robin Granites, Kumanjayi’s grandfather, thanked both volunteers and authorities for their efforts during the search, which lasted five days. He emphasized the importance of community support during this difficult time, stating, “We’re really grateful … it made us think we have people who really supported us.”
Following the tragic discovery, a 47-year-old suspect named Jefferson Lewis was arrested on Thursday night, although charges are yet to be laid. Granites urged community members to remain calm, especially in light of recent violence that erupted after the arrest.
The community has come together not only to mourn Kumanjayi but also to support her family through donations of food and blankets. A sunset vigil is planned for next week, encouraging attendees to wear pink, reflecting Kumanjayi’s favorite color. Local leaders are also collecting donations to assist the grieving family as they navigate this challenging time.
As the investigation continues, community members hope to maintain unity and support for one another, aiming for healing and remembrance in the wake of this tragedy.
