Arabic version: انقسام المجتمع حول اقتراح Cleanaway لإنشاء محرقة في Scenic Rim
A proposed $1.5 billion waste-to-energy incinerator by Cleanaway has divided the Scenic Rim community near Beaudesert, Queensland. The facility aims to process 760,000 tonnes of waste annually, which supporters claim could alleviate Queensland’s landfill crisis. However, opponents are raising concerns about potential health and environmental impacts.
According to ABC News, the incinerator would be located within the Bromelton state development area, approximately 70 kilometers south of Brisbane. If approved, it would divert about 12 percent of Queensland’s waste from landfills and generate enough electricity to power 105,000 homes and businesses.
Local resident Lizz Hills, a member of the community group Keep the Scenic Rim Scenic, expressed her opposition due to health concerns, fearing pollutants from the facility. She stated, “I don’t want them anywhere near my family. I don’t want them anywhere near our schools, my community.” Cleanaway, on the other hand, asserts that the incinerator will utilize advanced technology to minimize emissions and meet environmental standards.
Experts are divided on the health implications of modern waste-to-energy facilities. While some health professionals remain skeptical, others argue that new technologies effectively manage emissions. Local chamber of commerce president John Powell believes the incinerator could support the region’s growth, as Beaudesert anticipates the construction of 4,000 new homes over the next 15 years.
