The search for five-year-old Sharon Granites, who was last seen in her Alice Springs home early Sunday morning, has intensified as it enters its fourth day. Local volunteers are joining police and emergency services to comb through the challenging terrain surrounding the Todd River, hoping to locate the missing girl and her suspected abductor, Jefferson Lewis.

According to SBS News, Lewis, a recently released prisoner, is believed to have lured Sharon away from her Old Timers town camp residence on Sunday. He had been seen holding the girl’s hand prior to her disappearance and is suspected to have been under the influence of alcohol at the time. Although Lewis is not related to Sharon, he had been staying with her family before the incident.

On Wednesday, authorities planned to enhance their search efforts, which will include mounted police, helicopter aerial reconnaissance, and the use of thermal imaging drones. The police remain optimistic, stating they believe Sharon is still alive despite no confirmed sightings of her or Lewis.

The community of Alice Springs has rallied around Sharon’s family, with over 130 volunteers participating in the search efforts. Local businesses have contributed food for those involved in the search. Alice Springs Mayor Asta Hill expressed the collective anxiety felt by the community, emphasizing that everyone is hoping for Sharon’s safe return.

In a show of solidarity, the South Sudanese community in the area has called on its members to assist in the search, urging them to join police efforts. Northern Territory senator Jacinta Nampijinpa Price remarked on the gravity of the situation, describing it as “every parent’s worst nightmare” and encouraging the community to come forward with any information that could aid in bringing Sharon home.
