Joerg Kloepper, charged with the murder of Darwin mother Sheena Fairfield, may face indefinite detention due to “severe” mental illness. According to ABC News, Kloepper was deemed unfit to plead earlier this year, leading the court to record a not guilty verdict.

The NT Supreme Court heard arguments today regarding a custodial supervision order that would confine Kloepper to a mental health facility at the Darwin Correctional Centre. Prosecutor Neil Kumar emphasized the necessity of such an order, citing Kloepper’s “very significant depressive illness” and risk of self-harm.

Kloepper’s mental health assessments have revealed he remains a serious risk not only to himself but also to the community. The prosecution argued that without supervision, he poses an “inherent and serious risk to the safety of the community”. The court is expected to finalize Kloepper’s supervision status on Thursday.

Family members of the victim, Sheena Fairfield, attended the hearing, visibly affected by the proceedings. The judge noted that the decision to refrain from a trial was made with the family’s involvement, ensuring they were informed throughout the process. A major review of Kloepper’s condition is anticipated in 20 years, which will assess his potential release.
