Arabic version: فيضانات نهر دالي تقترب من مستويات قياسية مع توقعات للأمطار
The Daly River community is close to exceeding its record flood level, with the gauge at the Daly River Police Station measuring 16.16 metres as of Friday morning. This level is just centimetres shy of the 1998 record of about 16.3m. According to ABC News, a major flood warning has been issued for the Georgina River and Eyre Creek, which could affect properties along the NT-Queensland border.
The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has predicted further rain across parts of the Top End over the coming days, indicating that the flooding situation may continue for a prolonged period. Residents of Daly River, also known as Nauiyu, were evacuated from their community on Saturday and are currently staying at Foskey Pavilion at the Darwin Showgrounds. This marks the second major flooding incident for the community this year, with the previous peak reaching 14.2m.
In contrast, the flood threat in Katherine has subsided, with water levels now recorded below flood level at 14.25m. Approximately half of all homes in Katherine and the nearby community of Beswick have been assessed, resulting in 25 properties being classified as severely damaged. Emergency services continue to advise residents against driving through floodwaters.
Aside from the situation at Daly River, the BOM has issued a major flood warning for Georgina River and Eyre Creek, while the flood warning for the Victoria River area, including Kalkarindji, has been downgraded to a flood advice alert. However, moderate to heavy rainfall is still expected, which may lead to minor flooding in Kalkarindji, where levels are currently at 2.87m and rising. Further north, in Beswick, the BOM has issued its final flood warning, although levels are currently below flood levels at the Beswick Bridge gauge.
