Delta Goodrem’s performance of her song “Eclipse” in the semi-final of Eurovision 2026 has significantly improved Australia’s chances in the competition. Following her captivating performance, Australia’s odds surged from fourth to second place, now only behind Finland, the current favorite to win. Goodrem’s appeal lies in her powerful voice and engaging stage presence, reminiscent of iconic Australian performer Olivia Newton-John.

According to The Guardian, Jess Carniel, an associate professor at the University of Southern Queensland and a noted Eurovision scholar, predicts that Australia will likely finish in the top five, barring any major setbacks.

Australia has been competing in Eurovision since 2015, driven by a passion for the event that predates its official participation. Carniel notes that the interest in Eurovision among Australians extends beyond European migrants, as many from diverse backgrounds, including Asian Australians, find a cultural connection to the competition.

While Australia has enjoyed success in Eurovision, a win would not allow the country to host the event. EBU rules stipulate that Australia, as an associate member, must co-host with a full EBU member country. If Australia were to win, it would likely be offered to the runner-up, most likely Finland, due to logistical challenges, including time zone differences.

Despite concerns over potential bias against Australia from juries, historical results, such as Dami Im’s performance in 2016, suggest that juries are willing to award high scores based on merit rather than geography. Carniel emphasizes that the integrity of the jury system is crucial for maintaining fairness in the competition.
